John and Pam Griffin are just getting started on what will hopefully one day be the most dynamic strawberry U-pick farms in the province - from a bale maze to a farm stay campground, the possibilities on the 14-acre property of Good Earth Gardens and Berries are endless. The Griffin's 5-acre strawberry U- and Pre-Pick is off to a great start despite the juggling of jobs, family life and field work they do. Since John works in Winnipeg four days of the week, most of the weeding, mulching and harvesting is done as a combination of piece-work hired help, monthly WOOFers and family gardening weekends. The berries are mulched with straw in the fall and, aside from the odd spot spraying while the plants are dormant, weeds are prevented using a variety of cover crops such as fall rye, buckwheat, peas and clover. The couple still plans to make compost tea to spray on their plants throughout the season. Other ideas for the farm include an ice cream stand, a petting zoo and tunnel city, all of which their three children get rather excited about as soon as John mentions them.
